Research Abstract |
HOT SEA WATER DISCHARGE, WHICH IS ASSOCIATED WITH A HYDROTHERMAL ACTIVITY ON THE SEA BOTTOM, WAS TREATED AS A PLUME OF WHICH DENSITY WAS DECIDED BY BOTH TEMPERATURE AND SALINITY. THE BEHAVIOR OF HOT SEA WATER DISCHARGE WAS DISCUSSED USING A PARAMETERIZED THEORETICAL MODEL AND NUMERICAL MODEL. RESULTS FROM THE PARAMETERIZED MODEL ARE; (1)EVEN WHEN THE BUOYANCY OF THE PLUME-WATER VANISHED, A DIFFERENT TYPE WATER MASS WAS FORMED AT THE TOP OF THE PLUME COMPARED TO THE SURROUNDING WATER MASS BECAUSE THE DENSITY WAS DECIDED BOTH BY TEMPERATURE AND SALINITY. (2)THE LARGEST MASS OF SUCH WATER WAS FORMED WHEN THE HOT WATER DISCHARGE TOOK THE FORM OF A BUOYANT PLUME. (3)THE HOT WATER DISCHARGE WHICH WAS DISCOVERED IN THE OKINAWA TROUGH IS CONSIDERED TO TAKE A FORM OF A JET OR A FORCED PLUME. RESULTS FROM THE NUMERICAL MODEL ARE: (1)AT THE INITIAL STAGE OF THE HOT WATER DISCHARGE, A LARGE DISTURBANCE OCCURRED, WHICH RESULTED IN A LARGER VOLUME TRANSPORT OF THE SURROUNDING WATER THAN EXPECTED USING THE PARAMETERIZED MODEL. (2)A LARGER VOLUME OF A DIFFERENT WATER MASS WAS FORMED AT A SHALLOWER DEPTH THAN ESTIMATED BY THE PARAMETERIZED MODEL.
