Research Abstract

The longitudinal and the transverse electrooptic effects combining with the optical rotation in electrooptic single crystals of Bi_<12>SiO_<20> have been measured precisely and analyzed by using the results of theoretical crystal optics, under the conditions when the crystals were illuminated and were not illuminated by blue light. The following new results have been obtained:
(1) The dependence of the optical activity of Bi_<12>SiO_<20> single crystal on the electric field strength in the crystal has been detected and the first order electrogyration coefficient mu 41 has been determined. (2) The photoactivity, the phenomenon that the optical activity of the crystal is affected by illumination of light and had been reported in Bi_<12>SiO_<20> and Bi_<12>GeO_<20> crystals by P. V. Lenzo et al., has not been recognized, but the rotation of the polarized axis of transmitted light from the crystal plate has been affected by the illumination of blue light on the crystal. From precise measurements and analysis, it has been known that the effect is caused by the change of electric field due to the drift and the diffusion of photocarriers in the crystal.
Same phenomena as those described above have been observed also in the Bi_<12>GeO_<20> crystal. But in KD_2PO_4 crystal the optical rotation has not been observed and the optical activity does not depend on the electric field strength.
