Research Abstract |
The effect of H2-blockers(cimetidine, ranitidine and famotidine)on liver regeneration was studied in rats. Cimetidine and ranitidine significantly inhibited hepatocyte proliferation after both types(70% and 90%)of hepatectomy. Although famotidine did not suppress liver regeneration in case of 70% hepatectomy, this agent also suppress the hepatocyte division after 90% ablation of the whole liver. These data suggest that the inhibition of rat liver regeneration by these agents can be connected to the common properties of H2-receptor antagonist. On the other hand, we did no find hepatotoxic effects of H2-blockers, in terms of serum biochemistry, in the patients undergoing liver resection.
