Research Abstract |
The objectives of this study are to determine whether striated muscle can withstand arterial pressure and whether a segmental aortic defect can be repaired by using a muscle pedicle flap under both sterile and infected conditions. Seventeen mongrel dogs were subjected to a left thoracotomy and a segmental aortic defect 2 cm in length was made in the descending thoracic aorta. Dogs were followed for up to 36 months and evaluated by angiography and postmortem autopsy. There were four death shortly after surgery and eight dogs survived from the operation. No graft failure was observed in these eight survivors. Pseudointimal formation was excellent and no aneurysmal changes were noted in the long term survivors. These results suggested the feasibility of using a striated muscle flap to repair segmental aortic defect in contaminated situations.
