Research Abstract

A goal of our study is to elucidate cell biological properties that have influence on metastatic capability in lung cancer.
1) A comparative study between adenocarcinoma (115 cases) and squamous cell carcinoma (82 cases) of the lung on clinicopathological factors was performed in relation to hematogenous metastasis after curative resection. Concerning the factors related to metastasis, a clear difference between adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma was observed. Our results suggest that there are different factors influencing hematogenous metastasis in adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.
2) Laminin concentration in sera of lung cancer patients (76 cases) was measured. Laminin, one of constituents in basement membrane, has been suggested as mediating tumor cell attachment to vascular components in the course of hematogenous metastasis. Patients with small cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma showed abnormally high laminin concentration in sera. Some cell li … More nes established from human lung cancer were revealed to produce lanminin in vitro.
3) We measured the activity of thymidine kinase (TK), one of the enzymes in the activity in the salvage pathway of DNA synthesis, in the extract of resected lung tumors. TK activity in the tumor extract from the patients with recurrence after resection was significantly higher than that from the patients without recurrence. This suggest that TK activity in tumor extract may be a useful marker for cancer metastasis.
4) Clinical study was performed to establish the strategy for lung cancer recurrence. Limited operation for lung cancer pulmonary metastasis after lobectomy was studied in nine cases. Limited operation for recurrent lung cancer showed good outcome in this series and 5-year survival was 60% postoperatively. It was suggested that limited operation for such selected patients can be a beneficial therapeutic modality. We emphasized the importance to set up a high risk group for lung cancer recurrence and early diagnosis for it. Less
