Research Abstract |
Union International Center le Cancer (UICC) reached in 1987 an agreement on the TNM classification of maxillary sinus carcinoma. The TNM classification attests to its propriety by a characteristic satisfactory reproducibility, well-balanced distribution of cases, contribution to the establishment o f treatment programs, and facilitated prediction of the clinical outcome. The subjects consisted of 845 patients with maxillary sinus carcinoma treated between 1957 and 1983 whose clinical records are registrated and statistically analyzed by a personal computer. The results of the classification of 845 cases were as followed : T1 13, T2 240, T3 305, T4 287, Stage I 13, Stage II 204, Stage III 391 and Stage IV 237, respectively. The 5-year cumulative survival rates according to the clinical stage were Stage I 69%, Stage II 43%, Stage III 33% and Stage IV 14%, respectively. In addition, it was clarified that the extensive Denker's operation plays an important role to increase the success rate of the initial treatment, decrease the rate of maxillectomy and increase the survival rate, which were closely related with the local extent by T classification. These results sh owed the propriety of the International TNM Classification of maxillary sinus carcinoma.
