Research Abstract

1) ^<125>I-Regucalcin binds to isolated liver plasma membranes, and activated (Ca^<2+>-Mg^<2+>)-adenosine triphosphatase which functions as Ca^<2+> PUMP.
2) Ca^<2+> increased glucose-6-phosphatase activity in rat liver microsomes. The Ca^<2+> effect was reversed by regucalcin. Such effect was not seen in other metals.
3) Regucalcin activated Ca^<2+>-adenosine triphosphatase in rat liver microsomes. This suggested the possibility that regucalcin regulates Ca^<2+> transport system.
4) Regucalcin stimulated Ca^<2+> release from rat liver microsomes.
5) Regucalcin inhibited protein kinase C activity in rat liver cytosol.
6) Regucalcin inhibited Ca^<2+>/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase activity in rat liver cytosol.
From these findings, it has been demonstrated that a novel Ca^<2+>-binding protein regucalcin regulates liver cell functions related to Ca^<2+>.
