Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2015年9月14日にアメリカのLIGOが人類初の重力波直接検出に成功した。波源は連星ブラックホールの合体と推定され、重力波と連星ブラックホールの実在証明が初めて与えられた。さらに2015年12月26日にはもう一例の連星ブラックホール合体からの重力波観測が成功した。この観測をもって重力波天文学が開闢した。
そこで本申請課題では連星中性子星に焦点を当てて研究を行った。連星中性子星は現在までに実在証明が与えられている天体であり、宇宙年齢以内に重力波放出により合体することが知られている。日本のKARGAを含めた重力波干渉計の世界的ネットワークの構築が進んでいるが、連星中性子星合体はこれらの干渉計の重要なターゲットの一つである。
特に連星中性子星合体からの重力波からは中性子星物質の真の状態方程式、ショートガンマ線バーストの中心動力源、宇宙における鉄より重い元素の起原に関して重要な知見が得られるため、その観測がもたらす情報は連星ブラックホール合体からの重力波の持つ情報とは質的に異なる。そこで本申請課題では中性子星を特徴付ける重要な物理量である磁場に焦点をあて、中性子星磁場が連星合体の過程にどのような影響を与えるかを数値相対論シミュレーションで調べた。スーパーコンピューター京や国立天文台アテルイを使用して、既存の研究より遥かに高い解像度のシミュレーションを実行した。その結果を以下に要約する。
合体時の星の接触面は逆向きの速度場が存在するため、ケルビンーヘルムホルツ不安定性が発現し乱流渦が生成される。この渦に磁場が巻かれ、磁場が合体後数ミリ秒間に少なくとも1,000倍程度効率的に増幅される様子がシミュレーションからわかった。さらに合体後には磁気回転不安定性により磁気乱流状態が実現される。この結果実行的な粘性が生み出され、合体後の進化の描像を定性的に変え得るという帰結を本研究を通して得た。
