Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では,表面上に精密に形状や位置が制御された突起(アスペリティ)が多数配置された高分子ゲルを作成し,同種ゲル同士のスティックスリップ摩擦実験を行った.用いたゲルは,突起がない場合に摩擦不安定性を示さなかったが,突起を配置することで,突起対の接触・破断を伴うすべり弱化を示し,その結果,スロー地震のようなゆっくりとしたすべりだけでなく,通常の地震に類似した速いすべりを発生することがわかった.また,それらのすべりは共存し,時期によって同じアスペリティがゆっくりとすべったり,速くすべったりすることもわかった.さらに,すべりの規模とすべり継続時間との関係を調べたところ,プレート境界地震にみられるような,ゆっくりすべりと通常の地震の二極化が起こるのではなく,あるところでゆっくりすべりから速いすべりに遷移することが確認された.これらの現象は,すべり弱化における,準静的すべりと不安定すべりの遷移に対応し,すべり弱化の際の応力降下の(負の)傾きとシステムの実効的な剛性率の競合によって発生することが示唆された.これは,2次元半無限均質媒質における突起対の接触・破断を考慮した準動的シミュレーションによって検証が行われており,スティックスリップサイクルにおけるすべり弱化とシステムの実効的剛性率との競合が本質的であるとの考えが証明されている.
このように,本研究によって,これまで考慮されていなかった,アスペリティの接触・破断素過程を考慮したシンプルな実験系の構築によって,通常の地震とゆっくり地震とをつなぎ,かつ統一的に理解するための重要な例を提示することができた.
