Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、量子スピン系で実現する極低温まで磁気秩序を示さない量子スピン液体と呼ばれる状態に注目し、そこで現れる特異な素励起であるマヨラナ粒子がどのように物理量に表れるかを明らかにし、さらに、それが作るバンドのトポロジカルな性質が生み出す新規な物性現象の解明を目指して研究を行ってきた。具体的には、キタエフ模型と呼ばれる可解な量子スピン模型を解析することで以下の研究成果を得た。
(1) キタエフ模型における磁気ダイナミクスを数値シミュレーションによって解析し、動的スピン構造因子の温度変化を計算した。この結果は、実験的には中性子線散乱実験によって測定可能であることが知られている。実際に、キタエフ型量子スピン液体の候補物質であるルテニウム化合物における中性子線散乱実験の結果と本研究で得られた計算結果を比較することで、それらが良く一致することを示した。この結果は、ルテニウム化合物がキタエフ相互作用で良く記述でき、マヨラナ粒子の存在を示唆するものである。
(2) キタエフ模型に対して磁場効果を調べ、磁場によって新しい相が現れる可能性を数値計算によって示した。この相は、低磁場の相と比較してマヨラナ粒子の作るバンドのトポロジカルな性質が変化しており、相転移がマヨラナ粒子のバンドのトポロジーの変化を伴って起きることがわかった。
上記の研究成果は、量子スピン液体に内在するマヨラナ粒子の存在可能性とそのトポロジカル特性を議論し、その観測への道筋を作るものと期待している。
