Outline of Annual Research Achievements

非従来型の量子臨界現象を示すYb系準結晶Yb15Al34Au51の電子状態を理論的に明らかにするため、これまで解析が行われていなかった、Ybサイトの(1)4f電子の結晶場の効果、(2)4f軌道と5d軌道のオンサイトのクーロン相互作用の効果について研究を推進した。
(1)Yb系準結晶Yb15Al34Au51の基本格子構造をなすTsai型クラスターにおける第3殻のYbの正20面体クラスターの頂点に位置するYbの周りの局所原子配置構造を忠実に考慮した結晶場の点電荷モデルを構築した。結晶場ハミルトニアン行列を対角化することにより結晶場エネルギーと固有状態を求めた。Al-Au-mixed siteの存在を考慮したもとでの数値計算により、Ybの周りの各電荷配置を分類し、それぞれの実現確率を求めた。これにより、Ybの4f電子の結晶場基底状態のエネルギーは、周りの電荷配置の違いによってそれぞれ異なる値をとることが示された。その結果、Ybの価数転移の量子臨界点が基底状態相図上で斑点状に多数出現する描像を支持することがわかった。
(2) Ybの4f-5d軌道間斥力を取り入れた、Yb系準結晶Yb15Al34Au51の電子状態を記述する有効模型を構築した。基底状態に対する数値計算により、Ybの価数転移の量子臨界点近傍のYb価数の格子定数依存性を計算し、最近の実験による測定結果を定性的に再現する結果を得た。量子臨界点から格子定数の増加につれてYb価数が急激に減少する振る舞いは、基底状態相図における量子臨界点の位置の混成依存性を反映していることを明らかにした。これにより、Yb価数の格子依存性の測定データにおいて、Yb系準結晶Yb15Al34Au51がYbの価数が急激に減少し始めるポイントに位置している実験事実は、この物質においてYb価数の量子臨界点が実現していることを示唆していることを理論的に指摘した。
