Outline of Annual Research Achievements

全太陽エネルギーのおよそ半分を占める赤外域の太陽光の有効利用の実現は、光合成や太陽発電などに匹敵する新たな光エネルギー変換システムの発見に相当する。この赤外光をエネルギーへと変換することができれば、かつてない未開発のエネルギー資源の開発につながる。
申請者は赤外域に局在プラズモン共鳴(LSPR : Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance)を示すCu7S4(硫化銅)ナノ粒子と硫化カドミウムナノ粒子を連結させたヘテロ構造ナノ粒子を合成し、その水素生成光触媒活性を評価した。この結果、硫化銅/硫化カドミウムヘテロ構造ナノ粒子は、波長1100 nmでの外部量子効率3.8%という世界最長波長、かつ最高効率で赤外光から水素を生成できることを発見した。また、この赤外応答光触媒を利用することで、太陽光の最大波長である2500 nmの光を用いて水素を生成することに成功した。この事実は、新たに開発された赤外応答光触媒が赤外域の太陽光を使用して可視光応答光触媒であるCdSを駆動することができることを示している。従来のプラズモン誘起電荷分離は、電荷分離によって生じた正孔(ホール)と電子の再結合による損失が大きな問題であったが、新たに開発した光触媒は、273 マイクロ秒という電荷分離寿命を示した。これは、一般的なプラズモン誘起電荷分離の電荷分離寿命よりもはるかに長い寿命であり、長寿命の電荷分離が優れた触媒活性の原因であることが示された。今回開発された技術は、赤外光から高効率で化学エネルギーを発生することのできる光触媒として、革新的なエネルギーアップコンバージョン材料への応用が期待される。
