Outline of Annual Research Achievements

様々な色覚特性を持つ研究協力者を対象とし、仮性同色表、100 Hue Test、アノマロスコープを用いて知覚レベルの色覚検査を行い、2色覚と3色覚、またその中のサブタイプに分類した。研究協力者のゲノムDNAより赤緑視物質遺伝子を解析した結果、知覚レベルの色覚検査から予測される遺伝子型と一致する場合と、同じ遺伝子配列を持っていても、知覚は大きく異なる場合があった。また、一般3色覚の中に存在する赤緑視物質遺伝子の一塩基多型は、わずかな知覚的違いを生み出すことが報告されているが、本研究で実施した複雑な画像に対する色彩印象への影響はみられなかった。さらに、色票に対する色名呼称を調査した結果、ほとんどの2色覚者は3色覚者と同様の色名を答えた。これらのことから、視物質遺伝子以外の遺伝的要因、また経験などの後天的要因が、色の見えやカテゴリ化、複雑な画像への印象に大きく影響を与えると考察した。
並行して、霊長類における色覚の多様性と行動との関連を調査した二つの国際共同研究に加わった。同一種内に異なる色覚を持つ広鼻猿類の色の見え方をモデル化した研究では、森林に生息する種において、植物の花は3色覚個体にとって顕著性が高く、実際に3色覚個体によく採食されていることを示した。また、昼夜行性の行動パターンを持つ曲鼻猿類の色覚は種によって様々であるが、暗い時に活動的な種においては、色よりも明度コントラストが重要であり、2色覚が適応的である可能性を示した。
研究全体を通して、色覚の多様性を次のように捉えた。ヒトにおいては、遺伝子と経験の相互作用により複雑化し、異常/正常に二分できない個性の基となる性質である。進化的視点から見れば、遺伝的制約の下で、個体の適応的な行動を導く性質である。
