Outline of Annual Research Achievements

空間反転対称性の破れた物質の探査を次の合成指針で行った。1)強いスピン軌道相互作用が期待されるイリジウムやビスマスを含む,2)空間反転対称を破ためにsp3混成軌道が期待されるシリコンを構成元素にもつ。この指針の元,イッテルビウム-遷移金属元素-SiあるいはBi三元系化合物の合成を50以上の育成条件で試みた。新物質としていずれも磁性元素Ybの位置に反転心を持たないYbIr3Si7とYbNi2Si3を発見した。YbIr3Si7は近藤温度約20Kの物質であり,4.1K以下で反強磁性秩序する。YbNi2Si3はThCr2Si2とBaNiSi3の両者に類似した結晶構造を持つことから超伝導を期待したが,2mKまで測定を行ったが,反強磁性秩序温度0.35Kの重い電子系物質とわかった。また,希土類イオンがハニカム構造をもつDy4Pd9Ga24とEr4Pd9Ga24についても結晶合成を行った。
並行して,カイラル結晶構造を持つYbNi3Al9の純粋な左右性を持つ大型結晶育成法の開発を行った。育成に用いるフラックス法では,通常は多数の結晶核が生成して結晶の左右性や大きさを制御できない。そこで,温度勾配を用いて溶液の底部から冷却して結晶核の生成数を減らし,従来の約3倍の結晶を再現性よく得られるようになった。2mm角程度の純粋な左右性を持つ単結晶を得られるようになった。
また,磁気秩序にともなう対称性の低下にともなう電圧(電流)誘起磁化の観測を進めた。ErNi3Ga9は磁気秩序にともない対称性がR32からC2に低下する。この物質を用いて電気磁気テンソルの各項,特に非対角項が磁気秩序温度以下でのみ発現するかどうかを観測した。測定技術は向上したが,電気磁気効果が生じているかどうかを明確に判断するには至らなかった。
