Outline of Annual Research Achievements

一般に物質は空間反転対称性をもち、そこでの結晶場は空間反転に対して偶パリティの性質をもっている。ところが、局所的に空間反転対称性を破る結晶構造をもつ物質も存在し、そこでは空間反転に対して奇パリティの性質をもつ結晶場が発生する。本研究では、奇パリティの結晶場において電荷が移動することにより生じる新しい現象の開拓を行った。注目した物質はb-YbAlB4で、この物質はYb系初の超伝導物質としてのみならず、常磁性相で非従来型の量子臨界現象を示す物質として注目されている。b-YbAlB4が示す量子臨界性は、Ybの臨界価数ゆらぎの理論により統一的に説明されることが示されている。価数ゆらぎはYbの4f電子とその周りの伝導電子の間での電荷移動のゆらぎであり、価数転移の臨界点で臨界発散する。本研究ではb-YbAlB4の強相関電子状態の性質を結晶構造の対称性を正確に考慮して解析した。

まず混成描像に基づいて結晶場の解析を行った。混成についての2次摂動計算により、Ybサイトで4f電子の波動関数が5d電子の波動関数と純虚数の係数を通じて混成し、Ybサイトで電気多極子と磁気トロイダル多極子の自由度が活性となることがわかった。次に、b-YbAlB4についてYbの4f軌道と5d軌道、Bの2p軌道からなる有効模型を構築して、基底状態の性質を調べた。その結果、価数量子臨界点を実現する4f-5d電子間斥力の大きさUfdを同定し、Ybの価数をYb+2.71と同定した。これはb-YbAlB4やa-YbAl1-xFexB4 (x=0.014)で観測されているYbの中間価数と整合している。興味深いことに、Ufdにより、Ybサイトで4f電子と5d電子の電荷移動のゆらぎの効果が増大し、価数転移の量子臨界点において、価数ゆらぎが発散すると同時に電気多極子ゆらぎと磁気トロイダル多極子ゆらぎも発散的に増大することがわかった。
