Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では,高秩序で柔軟な応答を示すソフトクリスタルを実用性の高い材料として開拓するため,複雑な3次元構造体へと成形できる高分子ソフトクリスタルを開発した。高分子固体においては結晶領域と非晶領域が共存し,安定した相分離構造を形成することが可能である。これらの特性を活かし,柔軟な主鎖部位と結晶性側鎖部位から成るナノ相分離型ソフトクリスタルを作製した。
長鎖アルキル基を有するアゾベンゼン液晶モノマーを重合することによりリニアポリマーを得た。フィルムのXRDおよびTEM測定により,ポリマーがラメラ構造を形成することが分かった。またポリマーの有機溶媒中での物性を調べたところ,紫外光照射によりアゾベンゼンのトランス-シス異性化を引き起こすと,溶解性が向上することが分かった。これはシス体の生成によりラメラ状集合体が解離するためであり,光照射により側鎖結晶構造のスイッチングが可能であることが分かった。
次にポリマーを成形し,その光応答性を評価した。ソフトクリスタルポリマーは共有結合による永久架橋を持たないため,溶液プロセスおよび溶融プロセスによる成形加工および再成形が可能であった。溶融延伸法により高分子ファイバーを作製し,紫外光を照射すると光源に向かって屈曲した。ファイバー表層においてシス体が生成して結晶部位が減少することにより,高分子のエントロピー弾性による収縮が起こるためであると考えている。一方,無配向フィルムに紫外光を照射すると,光源から離れる向きに屈曲し,可視光を照射すると元の形状に戻った。これはラメラ構造の消失・形成に伴う体積変化によるものであると推察している。以上のように,高分子ソフトクリスタルにおいて結晶部位の形成・消失を光や熱で制御することにより,材料形状記憶・再成形・マクロ形状変化が可能になった。
