Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、黒潮源流から上流での乱流混合が発生するメカニズムとその影響に関して、現場観測と数値実験を実施した。2016年にトカラ海峡において実施した現場観測の結果、黒潮がトカラ海峡の海山上を流れる上流側の海山近傍で、鉛直波長100m程度の帯状のシアに関連した帯状の強い乱流層が形成されていることが初めて明らかとなった。さらに2017年にトカラ海峡で同様な観測を実施した結果、水平規模100kmで厚さ数100mという広範囲にわたって強い乱流層が亜表層で形成されていることが初めて明らかとなった。数値実験と2018年、2019年に実施した海山周辺に焦点を絞った観測の結果、このような広範囲に及ぶ強い乱流層は、黒潮が海山の斜面で生成する負の渦位に伴う対称不安定によって発生していることが示唆された。また、海山近傍で観測や数値モデルで確認できる近慣性内部波は、これらの海山周りの擾乱が二次的に発生させている可能性がある。台湾東方沖の黒潮源流域I-Lan Ridgeで実施した観測では、黒潮の影響は弱かったものの、台湾海峡越流が海嶺境界で生成する負の渦位を形成すると思われる箇所で強い乱流が観測され、負の渦位が普遍的にサブメソスケールの乱流層を形成する可能性が示唆された。一方、下流の日向灘沖では二次的に生成された近慣性内部波が、黒潮流軸付近で捕捉され著しく強い乱流を発生させている事が観測から明らかとなった。これらのことは、黒潮や恒流が海底地形で負の渦位を生成し、そこでの直接的な乱流層の形成、その周辺での近慣性内部波の生成とそれに伴う二次的な乱流の発生が、普遍的に発生していることを示唆する。
