Outline of Annual Research Achievements

一般的に、東シナ海黒潮域は、表層の栄養塩濃度が極めて低い貧栄養海域であることから、生物生産性が低く餌不足のために、魚類の仔稚魚には不適な環境と考えられてきた。しかし、この海域はサバ・アジなどの多獲性魚類の世界有数の産卵場でもあるという矛盾が知られている(Saito, 2019)。
本研究では、東シナ海黒潮域において、未解明な部分の多い黒潮フロント渦や陸棚縁辺で励起された内部波などのサブメソスケール(数~数十km規模)の擾乱現象が、海洋生態系に及ぼす影響を明らかにし、先の矛盾の解明に繋がるメカニズムを探ることを目的とした。
具体的には、近年実用化された高応答性光学式生物センサーを用いて、これまで難しかった栄養塩・植物プランクトン群集組成の高頻度・高解像度観測を実施した。
その結果、サブメソスケール擾乱に起因して亜表層において比較的強い乱流混合が生じ、有光層以深から有光層へと十分な量の栄養塩が供給され、衛星には捉えられない亜表層において大型植物の褐色藻と中型植物の緑藻が迅速に応答し、低次生態系構造が貧栄養的なものから富栄養的なものへシフトさせ、生物生産を促進させていることが明らかとなった。このことから、東シナ海黒潮域では、表層は貧栄養・低生物生産ながらも、頻繁なサブメソスケール擾乱により栄養塩が亜表層へ供給され生物生産が高まるために仔稚魚に十分な餌が供給され、世界有数の魚類産卵場を形成されている可能性を示唆した。
