Outline of Research at the Start

巨大地震の発生域の周囲では,スロー地震と呼ばれるゆっくりとした断層すべりが起こる.最近の研究で,こうした現象がプレートが沈み込み始める海溝に近いプレート境界浅部で多く見つかってきたが,そこでの岩石の物性や摩擦の特性はよくわかっていない.本研究はプレート境界浅部でスロー地震が頻発するニュージーランドヒクランギ沈み込み帯を対象として,海底地震計を用いた大規模探査のデータと波形インバージョン解析という先端的な解析手法を用いてプレート境界浅部の詳細な構造を解明する.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

地震発生の物理過程を理解するためには, 地震発生帯の摩擦特性と密接に関連する岩石物性および断層構造の詳細を明らかにすることが重要である。本研究では、スロースリップや低周波微動が多発するニュージーランドヒクランギ沈み込み帯北部において、日米英NZの国際共同研究の一環として取得した3次元地震波探査データに波形インバージョン解析を適用し、プレート境界浅部の詳細な3次元P波速度構造を推定し、その地質学的な解釈を行った。
調査海域では先行研究(Barker et al., 2018)によって幅20km、比高1kmほどの海山が沈み込んでいると考えられていたが、本研究では海山は従来よりも沈み込み方向に約10km深い側に位置する結果を得た。この海山は周囲よりP波速度が高速度となっており、また比抵抗構造探査(Chesley et al., 2021)で明らかとなった高比抵抗体の位置とよく一致することから、海山内部に貫入した深部岩体と解釈できる。これ以外にも海山と解釈できる複数の起伏がプレート境界断層上に存在することを確認した。これら海山が沈み込むことに伴い、その背後に流体を多く含む堆積岩がプレート境界断層に沿って沈み込み地震発生帯へ取り込まれると考えられる。さらに、主に火山砕屑岩からなるヒクランギ海台の上部地殻は通常の海洋性地殻より低速度を示すことから大量の流体を保有していることもわかった。この結果は、固結度の低い堆積物だけでなく海台の上部地殻物質もスロー地震発生域への流体供給源となりうることを示唆している。
国内外の学会や国際学術論文で成果発表を行った。上記の主要な成果をJGR Solid Earth誌に発表した学術論文はEditors' Highlightに選出され、AGUの情報誌EOSにて特集された。また、EGU General Assemblyにて招待講演を実施した。
