Outline of Research at the Start

外惑星領域における衛星や準惑星の内部では、潮汐作用などが原因となって氷が溶け、内部海が形成されているものもある。「とろみ」のついたスープが冷めにくいように、氷衛星内部海の「とろみ」は内部の熱進化に極めて重要な役割を果たしている。そこで本研究計画では、氷衛星内部海物質として想定される硫酸塩水溶液について、高圧力下で粘度測定を行う。また、測定結果を基に、氷衛星内部海の進化過程を考察する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

太陽系の外惑星領域では,表面が氷で覆われた天体が多数存在している。氷は水に浮くため,表面が凍っていても内部には液体になった領域が存在する天体がある。この様に天体内部に存在する水の領域は内部海と呼ばれている。内部海の存在が確認されている天体には木星の衛星であるエウロパや土星の衛星であるエンセラダスなどがあるが,エンセラダスでは内部海の物質が噴出する様子が探査衛星によって観測されており,この活動は氷火山と呼ばれている。さて,内部海はさらに内部の岩石との反応によって様々な成分が溶けていると考えられており,純粋な水ではない。特に,探査衛星によって軌道上には塩化ナトリウムやシリカが確認されていることから,内部海にはこれらの成分が溶けていたことがわかる。そこで本研究では,内部海の活動を理解するため,塩を含む水溶液の粘度を高圧力下で測定した。本年度はシリカ成分を追加した。実験は0~80 MPa, 260~300Kでシリカと塩化ナトリウムの量を変えて行った。実験の結果,粘度はシリカ成分の量に依存し,10 wt%で3桁の割合で増加することが分かった。また,NaClが5%増えると粘度は3~5倍増加することが明らかとなった。さらに,粘度の圧力依存性は横ばいもしくは単調増加であることが示され,純粋な水の粘度の圧力依存性とは異なることが分かった。この様にシリカ成分と塩を含む内部海の粘度は純粋な水の値と比べて最大で5桁も高くなる可能性があることから,内部海の冷却速度は大幅に低下することが考えられる。
