Outline of Research at the Start

材料科学では絶え間ない試行錯誤を経て優れた特性や最適な材料設計指針を得ることが一般的である。目まぐるしく変化する社会に対応すべく、望んだ特性や機能を持つような材料を自在にかつ迅速に設計することが求められている。この社会のニーズを満たすためには研究者の「感」や「経験」などに頼らず普遍的で効果的な材料設計を行える新しい手法の開発が必要である。ハチの巣構造を持つカーボンネットワークは離散幾何学でよく記述できる理想的な対象である。数学という普遍的な手法でカーボンネットワークをモデル化することで幾何学構造と材料特性の相関を深く理解し、新たな機能を予測する「逆問題」的材料開発の手法確立を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

初年度では、標準実現手法によって得られた知見が触媒設計に有効であることを実験的に実証した。そこで、最終年度では触媒に必要なもう一つの要素である電極自身の電気伝導特性の理解に向けて研究を拡大させた。
初年度で作製した3次元の周期的立体構造を持つグラフェン(以下、3次元と呼ぶ)に対して、グラフェンの曲がり具合を示す曲率半径を意図的に変更し、3次元集積化(曲面の詰め込み具合)がグラフェンの物性をどのように変えるのか、一定体積当たりどこまでの集積効率ならばグラフェンとしての特性を保持できるのかなどを検討した。つまり、本物質が持つ3種類の幾何学的な特徴:(1)原子間距離の伸縮を伴う曲面、(2)トポロジカル欠陥と呼ばれるグラフェンを3次元的に曲げるために不可欠な5、7、8員環構造と(3)疑似的な周期構造に着目した。(1)グラフェンの伸縮効果による炭素原子間の電荷の飛び移りの変調は、グラフェンの伝導電子の運動方向を変調する場(擬磁場)の発生させることが明らかとなった。従って、3次元グラフェンが持つ伸縮のある曲面上を電子が動き回ると、あたかも様々な方向に電子が散乱されるような効果を発生させた。(2)トポロジカル欠陥の周りを電子が一周すると、バレーと呼ばれるグラフェンの2つの異なる電子状態間を差し渡すように電子が散乱された。(3)周期構造をもつ3次元グラフェンの理論計算からは、周期の逆数に比例するバンドギャップの形成が示唆された。つまり、グラフェンに疑似的な周期構造が存在する場所では局所的にバンドギャップの形成が起こる可能性が見つかった。そこで、曲率の大幅に異なる3種類の3次元グラフェン(25 nm、50 nm、500 nm)の作製し、電気伝導性やキャリア易動度などを計測した結果、デバイス(受光素子、触媒電極やキャパシタなど)を考える上で重要な設計指針を得ることに成功した。
