Outline of Research at the Start

海底に広がる大山脈(中央海嶺)で起こる活発なマグマ活動は、地球内部から海洋への熱・物質供給を通して中長期的な気候変動に影響を与えるが、これまでの古気候復元や予測では考慮されてこなかった。そこで本研究では、南半球の中央海嶺を対象に海上・深海地球物理観測を実施し、気候変動における海底マグマ活動の役割を明らかにする。研究船(白鳳丸、みらい、しらせ)の航海において地形・磁気データを新たに取得し、古地磁気強度変動記録との対比を通して、過去430万年間における海底地形の周期性の時間変動を明らかにする。得られた結果を古環境記録と対比し、海底マグマ活動と氷期-間氷期サイクルや海水準変動との関連を検証する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

高分解能な海洋底年代の挿入法に関して、地磁気の極性逆転より短い波長の成分(Cryptchron)の普遍性を検証した。本課題で得られた南東インド洋海嶺の深海磁気異常データを用いて、地磁気クロンC12nで見られた深海磁気異常変動と、その時代にエチオピアに噴出した陸上溶岩の古地磁気記録を対比した。また、同時代をカバーする堆積物が採取されているIODP掘削孔U1331、U1332、U1333から得られた相対古地磁気強度変動データとも対比した。その結果、短期的な地磁気逆転イベントが3地域で同時期に起こっている事が同定された。
長基線の中央海嶺観測について、海底地形および磁気異常を解析した結果、海嶺中軸谷を対照とした地磁気縞模様が各海域で確認され、その期間で海底拡大速度に大きな変動はみられなかった。特にチリ海嶺においては、発達したAbyssal hillの構造は地磁気クロンC2nまで海嶺両側で認められるものの、南側においては両翼部のC2n以前で確認されなかった。また、東西の海底地形変動の違いが確認され、一部の領域では局所的な火成活動と考えられる大きな地形的高まりも観測された。これらの変動は、マントルの部分溶融度の不均質に起因する数100万年の変動とメルト輸送に起因する数10万年の変動の複雑な重ね合わせであると結論づけた。課題の焦点となる10万年以下の地形変動については、観察されるものの、今回観測した領域および形成時期を通じた系統的な変動は確認できなかった。したがって、少なくともミランコビッチタイムスケールでのマグマ活動は大規模な地形変動を作らないとの考察にいたった。
上述の成果について、JpGU Meeting 2021、日本地球化学会 第69回年会、The 12th Symposium on Polar Science、The 150th Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences fall meetingなどで招待講演を含む研究発表を実施した。
