Research Abstract

前年度の研究により、アゾベンゼン分子を液晶に添加して作製した液晶薄膜を用いて、高圧水銀灯やレーザー光による光反応をトリガーとして、液晶薄膜上にある種々の微小物体を非接触で、自在に直線運動や回転運動をさせることのできることを見出した。
本年度は、この見出した現象の作動原理を明らかにするために、光反応による液晶材料の物性変化について検討し、弾性変化が物質移動に関与していることを明らかにした。
さらに、単に物質を直線的に移動するのではなく、物質をトラップして、任意に動かすことができることを明らかにした。この現象は、光照射時のみ光相転移が起こり、照射部から光を移動させると素早く液晶状態に戻ることを利用することで達成することができた。これまでの光トラップは、極めて強いレーザー光が必要であること、あるいは物質の屈折率などの制約があったが、今回見出した方法は、比較的弱いレーザー光で可能であることから、微小物体操作技術として様々な応用が可能であると考えられる。
