Research Abstract

近年、"量子臨界点近傍に形成される新しい量子相"としての異方的超伝導と非フェルミ液体に大きな関心が集まっている。強相関電子系において、典型例としてこれまでCe系の重い電子系が主に研究されてきたが、本研究では我々のグループにより発見された新物質のYb系の重い電子超伝導体β-YbAlB_4およびその類縁物質を対象とし、この系の示す量子臨界性と超伝導の研究を行った。
まず、β-YbAlB_4の純良試料に対し常圧下の精密磁化測定を行い、零磁場近傍における磁化の発散的挙動を詳細に調べた。その結果、磁化がT/Bスケーリングを示し、実験精度(数G)の範囲内で実質的に零磁場量子臨界点が実現していることが分かった。このようなコントロールパラメータのチューニングを必要としない、いわば、自発的な量子臨界現象の発現は、金属において初めての現象であり、量子臨界相の可能性を強く示唆する興味深い結果である。
また、β-YbAlB_4および類縁物質のα-YbAlB_4はともに価数揺動系であるが、価数揺動の温度スケール約200K以下でも整数価数の近藤格子の様に振舞うことが分かった。この振舞いの起源を明らかにするため、Lu希釈系α-,β-Yb_<1-x>Lu_xAlB_4を作成し、Ybのサイト間相関の効果を明らかにする実験を行った。その結果、希釈によってα型、β型共に、低温の近藤格子的な磁化の寄与および比熱が減少し、x～0.6程度で近藤格子的な振舞いが消失することを明らかにした。さらに、α-YbAlB_4の電気伝導度の異方性からこの系でc-f混成が異方的である可能性を明らかにした。α-YbAlB_4のAlサイトにFeをドープした場合、磁気転移が出現する。このとき、わずか1%程度ドープした系では磁気転移が抑えられ、β型の常圧零磁場と良く似た量子臨界性を示す等、ドーピングにより量子臨界点が実現することが分かってきた。
