Research Abstract

当初計画に従い、(a)興味深い特性が期待されながらこれまで純良単結晶が育成できずに特性評価が遅れているSm及びYb系の充填スクッテルダイト化合物と、(b)新奇特性が期待できるカゴ状構造を持つ物質群の、二つの系について、単結晶を育成し基礎物性評価を進めた。
(a)SmRu_4Sb_<12>を除き、残されたSm系(SmTr_4As_<12>:Tr=Fe,Ru,Os)の全てについて、単結晶を用いた基本的な基礎物性評価を行った。何れも変化に富んだ相転移を示し、電気抵抗も共通して転移温度以上で明白な対数依存を示す。特に、非磁性相転移を示すSmRu_4As_<12>は、大きな電子比熱係数と磁場に対する鈍感性の視点から興味深い。Yb系では、格子定数が最も小さいYbFe_4P_<12>(金属的伝導と非フェルミ液体的振舞)と最も大きなYbOs_4Sb_<12>の単結晶で物性評価を行った(多結晶の既報と比較し、Yb^<3+>の磁気的転移とされた比熱の大きなピーク(0.7K)が不純物によること、結晶場によるとされた30KのピークがYbイオンの籠内ラットリングによることを示すなどの新しい情報を得て、結果として充填スクッテルダイトの全体像を把握する材料を揃えることができた。(b)希土類濃度が比較的近く、籠構造をもつ立方結晶系である、RT_2Al_<20>(T=遷移金属元素)、を重点対象として、主にT=4d、5dに注目して単結晶育成と基礎物性評価を行い、Yb系では測定された全ての系でYbが2価の状態にあることを確かめた。1例として、Γ_3非磁性基底状態を持つPrTa_2Al_<20>は、相転移(~0.6K)の磁場依存性は4極子秩序を示唆するが、電子比熱係数や抵抗は、通常のフェルミ液体に従うという不可思議な特性を示す。これらの結果の系統的な評価により、籠構造により増強されたc-f混成効果について理解が進むことが期待できる。
