Research Abstract

物質を構成する最も基本的な粒子はクォークである。しかし、クォークは単体では存在せず、現実に観測されるのはクォークの多体系であるハドロンである。従来クォーク2体ないし3体の束縛状態しか知られていなかったが、2003年以降、4体のテトラクォークや5体のペンタクォークの候補が相次いでみつかった。これらの粒子はエキゾチックハドロンと呼ばれ、ハドロンを構成するクォーク間の相互作用を研究する上で重要な情報をもたらす。特に、最初にSpring-8のLEPS実験で見つかったペンタクォークΘ+は明らかなエキゾチックハドロンの候補として注目されてきた。ただし、様々な実験で異なる結果が出ており、その存在はいまだ確定していない。
J-PARC E19実験では、J-PARCハドロン施設のπ中間子ビームを用いΘ+探索を行った。これはハドロン施設初の実験としてK1.8ビームラインで行われた。π-ビームを液体水素標的に照射し、π-p -> K-Θ+反応によって散乱されるK中間子を測定した。超伝導電磁石を有するスペクトロメータを用い、質量欠損法による高分解能でのΘ+探索が可能となった。2010年から2012年にかけ、ビーム運動量が1.92GeV/cと2.00GeV/cの2点でデータを取得した。前者の解析から、Θ+生成に対し質量分解能1.4GeV(半値全幅)を達成していることが確認できた。スペクトラム解析の結果、Θ+に対応するピーク構造は観測されなかった。生成断面積の上限として0.26μb/sr(実験室系)が得られた。これより、Θ+の崩壊幅に対する上限値として0.72MeVを導くことができた。この結果はPhys. Rev. Lett. 109 (2012) 132002として公表した。現在ビーム運動量2.00GeV/cのデータの解析が進行中である。これによりΘ+の幅に対してより強い制限をかけられる見通しである。
