Outline of Research at the Start

0.5 電子ボルトもの SOI が働く 5d 電子系では、スピンと軌道の自由度が結合し多彩な量子相が発現します。その1つがスピンネマティック相であり、いくつかの 5d 化合物で兆候が確認されていますが、この液晶状態の秩序変数や外場応答などは明らかでありません。本研究では、5d 化合物を対象とした集中的な物質開発によってスピンネマティック物質を開拓するとともに、申請者らがすでに量子液晶状態の兆候をとらえている物質に対する詳細な測定から特徴的な性質の解明を進め、スピン軌道結合電子系における量子液晶の物理の構築を目指します。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、5d 遷移金属酸化物の物質開発により、強いスピン軌道相互作用(SOI)のもとで発現する量子液晶状態を探索し、その特性の解明を目指します。温度に換算すると5000度にも達するSOI が働く 5d 電子系では、スピンと軌道の自由度が結合し多彩な量子相が発現します。その1つがスピンネマティック相です。そこで、2023年度は申請者らがすでに量子液晶状態の兆候をとらえているBa2MgReO6の類縁物質に対する詳細な測定からスピンネマティック相が化学置換によってどのように変化するかの解明を進めました。また、金属において電子液晶相を有すると考えられるCd2Re2O7の類縁物質の探索を行いました。
2022年度は、Ba2MgReO6に圧力を印加し、4万気圧以上の圧力においてスピンネマティック相が消失し、同時に磁気秩序が強磁性的から反強磁性的な振る舞いに変化することを明らかにしました。2023年度はMgサイトにより大きなCaとCdを含む固溶体を合成し、化学圧力によってスピンネマティック相が消失する近傍の物質を常圧において実現し、より詳細な相変化を調べました。この結果、磁気構造の変化はスピンネマティック相の消失と同時に起こるわけではなく、磁性が変化してもなおスピンネマティック相が維持されることが分かりました。また、圧力効果によって遷移金属同士の距離が変化し、電気四極子が大きな影響を受けることが相変化の主要な起源であることを明らかにしました。
Cd2Re2O7の類縁物質の探索では、同じ結晶構造を有するパイロクロア化合物を合成し、物性測定によりPb2Re2O7においてス電子液晶相の兆候を観測しました。純良な単結晶を用いて放射光X線回折実験を行った結果、過去の報告と異なる結晶構造を持つことが明らかになり、300K以下でCd2Re2O7と同じ型の電子液晶相が実現していることを明らかにしました。
