Outline of Research at the Start

フラーレンの疎水性“内部”空間を精密制御することで,数と形が規定された水分子クラスターを構築することができると考えられる.一方で,骨格“外部”の構造修飾により水素結合を介した多次元集積構造を構築できると考えられる.すなわち本研究課題では,「①フラーレンの内外の骨格を利用することで,水分子の関与する機能やダイナミクスをナノレベルで理解」するとともに,「②高次集積構造に由来した新たな水圏機能開拓」を目指す.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

開口型フラーレンは出入口をもつ球状炭素骨格であり、一定の条件に付すことで水分子などのゲスト分子を選択的に取り込む機能がある。この機能を用いることで、包接水分子の性質を解明する研究を進めてきた。例えば、放射光顕微IR分光法を用いることで、開口型フラーレンに対する水吸着特性について調査する中で、水分子内包体では非包接体に比べて吸着能が低下することがわかった。詳細な検討の結果、用いた開口型フラーレン上のエーテル部位に対して、内包水が水素結合を形成することで、連結している水酸基の分極および配向に摂動を与えることが原因であることがわかった。一方、カテコールやフルオレノールといった一般的な芳香族アルコール分子に対しては水の吸着挙動は見られず、開口型フラーレンの高い電子受容性が水を引き寄せる駆動力になっていると結論付けられた。このような水吸着挙動は極性官能基をもつポリマー等によく見られるが、開口型フラーレンの場合には、3000~2500 cm-1付近にも吸着水に相当するIRバンドが観測された。これは、酸性水に対応しており、理論計算によるシミュレーションや気相酸性度の算出値からも支持された。開口型フラーレンの特異な電子受容性が開口部上の水酸基の酸性度を局所的に上昇させ、一部の吸着水を酸性化しているものと考えられる。
一方、水分子に限ることなく、水圏において重要な有機分子であるアンモニアやアセトニトリル、メタノール、二酸化炭素などを包接した開口型フラーレンについても新たに合成し、比較的サイズの大きな極性分子を包接した場合には、開口型フラーレンの極性や電子物性が変化することを見い出した。さらに、極性をもたない二酸化炭素はそのサイズによる要請から開口型フラーレン上に設けた水酸基の配列がわずかに変化することで、水素結合形成によるホスト分子自身の二量化挙動が変化することも見い出した。
