Outline of Research at the Start

森林土壌に蓄積した膨大な有機炭素の動態に及ぼす気候変動の影響とそのメカニズムを解明するために、代表申請者は独自に構築した土壌を中心とした陸域生態系における温暖化効果ガスフラックスに関する「世界最大規模のチャンバー観測ネットワーク」を活用し、日本を中心に東ユーラシア地域を網羅する代表的な森林生態系における温暖化操作実験及び降雨操作実験を実施する。また、そこから得られた土壌有機炭素分解速度に関する連続観測データに基づき、広域推定及び将来予測を行う。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

陸域の土壌に蓄積した膨大な有機炭素の動態に及ぼす気候変動の影響とそのメカニズムを解明するために、独自に構築した「世界最大規模の自動開閉チャンバー観測ネットワーク」を活用し、日本を中心に東ユーラシア地域を網羅する代表的な森林生態系における温暖化操作実験を継続しながら観測データに基づき、各サイトにおける土壌CO2フラックスの時空間変動や温暖化に対する応答メカニズムを解析した。また、独自に構築したデータベース及び衛星リモートセンシングデータを活用し、機械学習モデルを用いて日本を含む東ユーラシア地域の陸域生態系におけるCO2フラックスの広域評価を行った。
その結果、(1) 土壌有機物の分解によって、土壌からは膨大な量のCO2が放出され、温度上昇に伴って放出量が大きく増加した傾向を見られた。(2) 既往の欧米における温暖化操作実験の結果に比較すると、湿潤かつ土壌有機物蓄積量が多い東ユーラシア地域の森林では、土壌からのCO2排出は温暖化に伴う増加が長期間に渡って維持されることなどが示された。(3) 得られた観測データに基づき、温暖化によって2100年までに全世界の約40%の土壌有機炭素が分解され、大気中のCO2濃度が現在よりも約150ppm増加すること示唆された。(4) 独自に構築したデータベースや衛星観測データを活用し、機械学習モデルを用いて東ユーラシア地域における森林土壌CO2フラックス変動の広域評価を可能にした。
