Ｙｂ系重い電子化合物における価数ゆらぎと量子臨界現象

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

価数搖動系β-YbAlB4および同じく価数搖動系の多形体α-YbAlB4を対象に、これらの物質の示す強い価数揺らぎの下での量子臨界現象、超伝導、メタ磁性的振舞いの機構の解明を目的とし研究を行っている。本年度は主に以下の結果を得た。
まず、量子臨界性等の起源を明らかにする上で、そもそも何故、これらの系が200 - 300 Kの価数揺らぎの温度スケールより十分低温の約数10 K以下で、近藤格子的な振舞い、すなわちキュリーワイス的な磁化の増大や大きな比熱等を示すのかを明らかにする必要がある。この問いに対する知見がβ-YbAlB4のホール効果測定から得られた。興味深いことに、100 K以下の低温でホール抵抗が磁場に対して非線形になり、これがホール面と低キャリア密度の電子面からなる2バンドモデルによって説明されること、さらに、低温における重い電子の振舞いは低キャリア密度の電子面の寄与によると考えられることが分かった。この系の量子臨界性および超伝導の起源を探る上で重要な知見が得られたと考えられる。
一方、α-YbAlB4のメタ磁性的な振舞いは、磁化容易軸のc軸方向に約3 Tの磁場中で生じる。電気抵抗測定からc軸方向に電流を流した際にメタ磁性磁場において顕著な非フェルミ液体性が確認されること、ab面内電流の場合に非フェルミ液体性は現れないものの、メタ磁性磁場以上の磁場で大きな負の磁気抵抗を示すなど、極めて異方的な振る舞いを示すことが分かった。また極低温比熱測定から、メタ磁性磁場において比熱は発散的な振舞いを示さないが、より高磁場で大きく抑制されること、さらに帯磁率、電気伝導測定の結果と組み合わせて得られるウィルソン比、門脇-ウッズ比は共にメタ磁性磁場の上下で概ね一定値をとるなど、従来の磁気量子臨界点とは異なる何らかの量子臨界性と関連していると考えられる特異な振舞いが明らかになってきた。
