Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の目的は、金属絶縁体転移を示す希土類化合物に対して、電流及び電圧をパラメータとして電子状態を制御し、それらの物質群における低温秩序相の電場に対する応答と金属絶縁体転移の起源を明らかにすることです。
前年度は、パルス電圧を用いた低温非線形測定装置の開発を行いました。今年度は、その開発した非線形伝導装置を用いることで希土類化合物SmSの低温での非線形伝導の観測に成功しました。50K以下の低温領域で、電流を関数として電気抵抗の計測を行ったところ、電流の増加に対し、有意な電気抵抗の現象が観測されました。本物質は圧力下において、バンドギャップが減少し、エキシトンの束縛エネルギーよりも小さくなる圧力においてエキシトン絶縁相になることが、圧力下での光学伝導度計測から指摘されています。そのようなエキシトン不安定性をもつ半導体の非線形伝導計測の例はこれまでになされておらず、本研究において初めてその非線形性が明らかになったと言えます。さらに、本物質は、オームの法則から外れた非線形伝導のみならず、直流電場下で電流が交流発振を示すという直流交流変換を示すことを明らかにしました。これは明らかな非熱効果であり、本質的な電場効果であるといえます。一方、このような非線形伝導や交流発振現象は、非線形伝導を示す分子性導体や酸化物などでも発見されており、これら強相関電子系に共通のメカニズムの存在が示唆されます。
