Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、三次元ナノ構造を有するブルー相(BP)液晶内の欠陥ネットワーク部位に金属微粒子を分散して、この有機無機融合ネットワークを活用したフォトニックデバイスの実現を目指し、(1)ナノ粒子(NP)分散によるBPの熱力学的安定性の向上、(2)安定化させたBP液晶を用いた偏光無依存屈折率変調素子の特性改善、(3)金属NPの配列制御とプラズモン制御を検討した。詳細は以下の通り。
(1)液晶への直接スパッタリング法を用いて、濃度の異なる金NP添加BP液晶を作製し、BPの発現温度範囲を調べた。金NPの添加によって、昇温過程でBPの発現温度範囲拡大が認められ、熱力学的にBPが安定化されることを示した。またBPの発現温度範囲は金NPの濃度が高いほどより拡大され、BPを不安定化する配向欠陥の体積が金NPによってより多く排除されたものと考察した。
(2)ファブリ・ペローエタロンの空隙にBP液晶を導入し、BP II の屈折率の電界依存性を評価した。その結果、電界の印加により屈折率が低下しその変化量は低電界領域においてほぼ電界の2 乗に比例し、カー効果を確認した.また,電界誘起によるコレステリック(Ch)相転移が見られなかったNP添加BP II においては高い電界を印加することにより、0.011(8.5 V/μm)の変調量が得られた。
(3)BP I、BP IIおよびChを示す三種類のキラル液晶における金NPの分散性について、局在表面プラズモン共鳴(LSPR)の観点から調べた。等方相およびBPI、IIでは、金NPのLSPRに起因する吸収のピークが観測され、金NPの分散が確認された。一方、Ch相では、LSPRに起因する吸収はその他の相と比較してブロードとなり、ピーク波長も長波長シフトし、各々のキラル相の秩序構造に起因して、金NPの分散状態が異なることが明らかとなった。
