Outline of Annual Research Achievements

細胞の確率統計的なシステムで、また細胞のまわりの環境もまた大きくゆらいでいる。それにもかかわらず、細胞は環境の情報を適切に感じ取り、処理をし、応答をする。走化性細胞は外部の誘引物質の濃度が低く緩やかな勾配を効率良く検出することが出来る。この効率の良い走化性情報処理の背後にある機構を理解するために、細胞の勾配検出、細胞の形態変化、運動に関する理論的な研究を、コンセプトモデルを用いて行った。わたしたちの研究から、細胞外の濃度勾配から、レセプターで検出できる勾配情報の最大値は、レセプターとリガンドの反応の確率性に大きく影響を受けることが分かった。もしも細胞が濃度勾配の大きさと方向の両方を検出しているとすると、伸長した形態の細胞は、伸長方向と垂直方向に移動する傾向がある。一方、勾配の方向だけを検出する場合、細胞は伸長の方向に運動する傾向がある。(Baba, et al. 2012)さらに細胞の運動方向の確率密度関数は、これらの2つの場合で定性的に違っていることが分かった。(Hiraiwa et al. 2013)。実験によって計測された細胞性粘菌の運動方向の確率密度関数は、これらの場合のうち、勾配方向のみを検出する場合と一致した。さらに細胞の極性形成が勾配検出の能力を増加させることがわかった。
細胞性粘菌などのアメーバ様の運動をする細胞は複雑な形態を変化させて移動する。わたしたちは細胞の形態の統計的な性質を調べた。その結果、細胞性粘菌の複雑な形態は、適切な座標を選ぶことで、比較的少数の自由度で表わされることが分かった。
