Outline of Research at the Start

惑星系誕生の舞台となる星間分子雲では,星間塵(鉱物の微粒子)の温度は10-20Kまで下がり,その表面はCOやCH3OHなどを含むH2O氷(氷星間塵)が形成される.いっぽう,太陽系(惑星系)初期に形成された隕石には「炭素質物質」と呼ばれる黒い固体有機物が存在する.なぜ「星間分子雲の氷星間塵」と「太陽系の隕石の炭素質物質」とでは,両者の化学組成がこれほど異なるのかは未だにわかっていない.本研究では,炭素質物質の生成過程として重要視されている「氷星間塵の光反応」と「鉱物表面の触媒反応」について実験し,炭素質物質の生成効率を明らかにすることで,どちらが隕石の炭素質物質の起源として有力か議論する.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究課題は,星間空間に存在する固体有機分子の生成過程として重要視されている「氷星間塵の光反応」と「鉱物表面の触媒反応」について実験し,両者の固体有機物の生成効率を明らかにすることを目指すものである.研究を開始するにあたり,有機分子の光反応を議論するための基礎となる「有機分子の光吸収スペクトル」を得るべく,紫外吸収分光法によって飽和脂肪酸の光吸収スペクトルを測定していたところ,極めて重要な発見があったので,本年度はそちらに注力した.
飽和脂肪酸は地球の海洋表面や海洋エアロゾルに豊富に含まれることが知られている重要な有機分子である.飽和脂肪酸の光吸収は90年以上研究されてきた歴史があり「飽和脂肪酸は太陽光(295 nmより長波長の光)をよく吸収する」と考えられてきた.しかし,光吸収のメカニズムについては未だによくわかっていない.そこで飽和脂肪酸の一種であるノナン酸について,試薬に含まれる不純物を独自に開発した精製装置により徹底的に取り除いたところ,太陽光をほぼ吸収しないことが明らかになった.紫外吸収分光法,高速液体クロマトグラフィー,核磁気共鳴分光法を組み合わせることで試薬中の不純物を分析したところ,これまでに報告されてきた太陽光の波長領域の光吸収は,ノナン酸に由来するものではなく,試薬中に微量に(0.1 %以下)存在するケトン類の不純物によって引き起こされていたことを明らかにした(Saito et al., Science Advances, 9, eadj6438, 2023).
本研究によって「海洋表面や海洋エアロゾルの飽和脂肪酸(ノナン酸)が太陽光を吸収し光反応を起こすのか?」という問題に決着がつけることができた.また本研究成果は,光を使った実験研究では不純物の影響を評価することが結果を正しく解釈するために必要であることを示している.

当初予定していた研究をきっかけに,星間化学だけでなく地球大気化学や光化学に重要な「有機分子の光吸収における不純物の寄与」について重要な知見が得られたため.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

本年度の成果によって,凝縮相(固相と液相)の有機分子についてはノナン酸をはじめ未だに正確な光吸収スペクトルが得られていない分子が多いことがわかった.凝縮相の有機分子の光吸収スペクトルを測定するためには,不純物を除去するための精製法を確立する必要があるが,現状の精製法はノナン酸についてはうまくいくものの,他の分子(オレイン酸など)ではうまくいかないことがわかっている.そこで今後は,ノナン酸以外にも適応できる試薬の精製法の開発に取り組む.また本研究課題で本来行う予定であった「氷星間塵の光反応」や「鉱物表面の触媒反応」による固体有機分子生成実験についても,装置の開発を進めているので,今後も継続して取り組む.
