Research Abstract

近年、地球と似た大きさの、そして地球とよく似た環境にある惑星の探査が盛んになりつつある。仮にこのような星が、太陽のような星の周囲にあったとしても、その検出はまだ難しい。しかしM型星と呼ばれる小質量の星を周回する地球型惑星の検出は実現できそうな状況にある。
このような探査の技術的なポイントは、近赤外線による高精度分光観測である。近赤外線でM型星を分光観測し、その運動を長期間に渡って観察する。そうすると、地球のような惑星が存在する場合、その重力によって中心にあるM型星が視線方向にふらつく。このような現象を通して惑星の存在を確認することができる。太陽系外にある地球のような惑星の検出を実現するためには、分光器の一部として光ファイバーが欠かせない。光ファイバーで星の光を、常に分光器の同じ場所に導く事によって、安定した星のスペクトルが得られるようになるからである。
本研究では上記の目的に特化した分光器に最適な赤外線光ファイバーを選定するための実験を行ってきた。波長1550nm、直径4nmのビームの焦点像をマルチモードファイバーに結合する実験装置をくみ上げ、ファイバーの製造元、種類、形状、サイズ等による射出光の重心安定性を比較した。実験の結果、コアサイズが60ミクロンの円形ファイバーでは、重心の安定性はコア直径の約500分の1となり、分光器に必要な精度を達成できることが分かった。安定性が高いと予想されていた多角形ファイバーでは、安定した結果は得られなかった。これらの結果について、日本天文学会において複数の発表を行った。
