Outline of Annual Research Achievements

コンパクト天体連星の合体は地上重力波干渉計に対する有望な重力波源である。検出効率および信頼性を上げるためには、重力波に付随する電磁波対応現象の観測が重要となるが、現在のところ、連星合体時に放出される中性子過剰物質中で進行するr過程元素合成からの崩壊熱をエネルギー源とする赤外・可視・紫外光放射が有望視されている。
そこで本研究では、連星中性子星合体の数値相対論ニュートリノ輻射流体シミュレーションを行い、合体時における放出物質の動力学的・熱力学的・化学的特性について調べ、そこでどのような元素合成が進行するかを明らかにし、その結果として発生する崩壊熱を計算した。前年度に構築した共同研究体制に則り、連星合体シミュレーションは関口が行い、r過程元素合成計算は西村信哉氏(Keel大学)、和南城伸也氏(理化学研究所)との共同研究で行った。その結果、(1)放出物質の性質は中性子星を記述する状態方程式に強く依存するが、(2)原子核物理実験及び中性子星観測から示唆される状態方程式を用いた場合に大質量の物質放出が期待され、(3)そのために高光度の電磁波放射現象が付随しうることが明らかとなった。
さらに、本研究は、重力波に付随する電磁波対応天体としての観点のみならず、宇宙における、「重元素の起源」の観点からも重要な意味を持つことが明らかとなった。すなわち、実験および観測が示唆する状態方程式を用いた場合に得られた元素合成のパターンが、太陽系の元素組成観測結果とよく一致し、そのため、連星中性子星の合体が重元素の起源であることを強く示唆する結果が得られた。この結果に基づき、従来有力視されてきた超新星爆発に代わる新たな重元素合成のパラダイムを提示した。
