Outline of Annual Research Achievements

化合物半導体による水の光分解反応を太陽エネルギー変換の水準まで引き上げるには、固有吸収が可視光領域の多くをカバーするナロウギャップ半導体を利用することが不可欠である。研究代表者らはこれまでに、ナロウギャップp型半導体であるCuIn(Se,S)2(CIS)系化合物半導体薄膜が水分解の還元側(水素発生側)の光電極材料として有効であることを見出してきた。この系では、CIS系化合物薄膜表面にn型半導体層を積層させてp-nヘテロ接合を形成させ、さらにその表面にPt微粒子を添加することでバイアス下での水分解水素発生が効率よく進行する。このとき、必要なバイアス電圧の高さは、それらのp-nヘテロ接合をベースとして作製した太陽電池の開放電圧(VOC)が高いほど低くなる。すなわち、高VOCが得られるp-nヘテロ接合太陽電池が得られれば、低バイアス電圧あるいはバイアスフリーで水分解水素発生を進行し得る光カソードとなると期待される。本研究は、このようなアイデアに基づいて、新たなp-nヘテロ接合からなる水の光分解水素発生系を構築することを目的とする。
平成26年度は、光吸収を担うCIS薄膜表面のラフネス制御および新規p型半導体薄膜のの開発に取り組んだ。その結果、表面ラフネスの増加による水分解効率の向上、および、Cu2ZnSnS4が新たな光吸収層として有望であることを見出した。前者は、当初予想していた通り、表面積増大によって反応サイトが増加したことによると考えられ、後者においては、これまでのCIS系電極に匹敵する大きな光電流が得られたことに加えて、電極安定性がきわめて高いことを明らかにした。
