Outline of Annual Research Achievements

AA-BB型の逐次重合を連鎖(リビング)ラジカル重合と組み合わせた同時重合系を開発し、配列周期的にさまざまな官能基や金属錯体が導入された特殊構造ポリマーの合成を検討した。とくに、温度応答性ポリマーを与えるNIPAMをモノマーとして用い、周期的に導入された官能基が温度応答性に与える影響について考察した。温度応答性は、一般に周期的に導入された疎水性基・親水性基によって変化するが、周期的にそれらを導入した場合、その個数よりもむしろ周期間隔が温度応答性に影響することなどを明らかとした。ここで、水酸基を配位子とすることで周期的に水に対して安定な有機チタン錯体を導入することにも成功した。
さらに、より親水性の高いカルボン酸ナトリウム塩を周期的に導入した場合、50~70ユニットに一つしか金属塩が導入されていないにもかかわらず、相転移温度以上では凝集沈殿は生じず、直径が数十nm程度のミセル凝集体を形成することも明らかとした。このような現象は周期的官能化ポリマーのときにのみ特異的に観測され、ランダムポリマーや末端官能性ポリマーでは系全体で凝集し沈殿を生じた。このとき、凝集体の大きさは周期間隔にはほとんど影響しなかったが、導入するカルボン酸の主鎖からの距離により20nmから30nmまで変化した。
また、カルボン酸塩とは別にアルコキシシリル基を周期的に導入することにも成功した。このようにして得られたポリマーに対して、シランカップリング反応を行なうことで、生成したミセル凝集体の構造を無機成分で固定化することで、温度に応答して膨潤・収縮を繰り返し行なうことのできる機能性微粒子も合成できることも明らかにした。
