光応答性分子結晶の構造変化による固体物性制御

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

外部刺激に柔軟に応答する柔らかな分子系における高度な分子集積と機能創成に関する研究として、フォトクロミック分子の光異性化反応に伴う構造変化により固体物性を可逆的に制御できる分子結晶を創出することを目的とした。
応答波長の異なる2種のフォトクロミック分子からなる2成分混晶の光誘起結晶変形を観測した。紫外光照射により青色の異性体を生成する分子(A)および赤色の異性体を生成する分子(B)を含む混晶を合成した。無色の針状結晶に紫外光を照射すると、AとBの両方の構造変化により、結晶は紫色に着色するとともに屈曲変形を示した。そのあと、Aの青色の異性体のみが吸収する750 nm光を照射すると、Aの退色反応が選択的に進行し、結晶の屈曲は一部解消されたが、B由来の屈曲が残った。さらに、500 nm以上の可視光を照射すると、Bの退色反応が起こり、結晶はもとのまっすぐな形に戻った。2種のフォトクロミック分子を同一結晶内で複合化し、照射光の波長を選択することで、2成分の構造変化を反映した結晶変形の制御が可能であることが示唆された。
誘電物性の光制御に向けて、分子間水素結合を有するフォトクロミック分子結晶を合成した。水素結合性のイミダゾールを有するフォトクロミック分子は、結晶中において分子間プロトン移動を示し得る水素結合一次元鎖を形成していることが示唆された。単結晶の電気物性を測定したところ、誘電率の温度依存性・電場周波数依存性が観測された。また、このフォトクロミック分子は結晶中での光異性化反応が可能な立体配座に固定されており、紫外光と可視光の照射による結晶の可逆的なフォトクロミズムが観測された。
フォトクロミック分子の構造変化により高度なメカニカル機能を示す分子結晶を見出し、誘電物性の光制御に向けた水素結合性フォトクロミック分子結晶の設計に関する知見を得た。
