圧力誘起体積収縮を用いた巨大負熱膨張物質の開発

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

ペロブスカイト化合物PbCrO3のが圧力印加で示す10%もの巨大な体積収縮のメカニズムを解明した。高圧合成で得られるペロブスカイトPbCrO3は、長らくPb2+Cr4+O3の反強磁性絶縁体だと考えられてきた。しかしながら、立方晶で指数づけできるX線回折ピークはブロードで、4.01Åという格子定数はSr2+Cr4+O3にくらべ4.8%も長く、La3+Cr3+O3よりも長い。また、t2g2の電子配置を持つCr4+であれば金属伝導が期待されるのに、絶縁体であるのも不思議である。2010年に、PbCrO3を加圧すると、1.6GPaで9.8%の体積減少を示すことが報告され注目を集めた。硬X線光電子分光測定で、Pb2+とPb4+の存在が明らかになった。電子顕微鏡観察ではPb位置に乱れがあり、短距離秩序の存在を示唆する3a×3a×3aの散漫散乱が見つかった。この結果を元に放射光X線PDF解析を行い、この物質が常圧ではPb2+とPb4+が3格子間距離程度の短距離秩序したPb2+0.5Pb4+0.5Cr3+O3である事を確かめた。この結果はDFT計算とも符合しているこうしたことから、Pb2+Cr4+O3への転移が圧力誘起体積減少の起源であることを明らかにした。これはサイト間電荷移動によって巨大負熱膨張を示すBiNiO3と同様の変化なので、化学置換によって巨大負熱膨張が発現すると期待される。
