Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本課題研究は、社会性魚類における共感性を調べることで脊椎動物の共感性の起源を探索ろうとしれいる。期間内に１、推移的推察、２、顔認知に基づく個体認識などの社会的認知、３、しっぺ返し戦略に基づくなわばりの親敵関係、４、ペア繁殖種における正および負の共感性の予備的検証実験などで成果を上げることができた。
今回の研究から社会性魚類の認知能力は従来思われてきた以上に発達していること、その中には自己鏡像認知も含まれ、自己認識をしている可能性が非常に高いこと、ペア繁殖魚の間では相手を助けるあるいは相手に利する共感的な行動が認められることが強く示唆された。魚類における共感性を調べた研究はこれまでほとんどなく、今回の研究成果は画期的と言える。
共感性実験では、具体的には負の共感として相手への電気負荷に対する救済行動、正の共感として相手個体への給餌を指標として用い、比較的短期間に救済や給餌による援助や救済行動が認められた。魚類では情動伝染はあっても特定個体へ向社会的行動ははじめての発見であり、この研究成果の意義は高い。
以上のように、社会的認知能力だけではなく共感性においても相手個体を正確に認識した上でなされており、魚類でもおそらく自分の行為の持つ意味を「理解」した上で、共感行動を行っている訳である。我々の研究成果は共感に必要な高い認知能力、それにともなう多様な情動がすでに脊椎動物の進化の初期段階ですでに生じている可能性を示している。これらは、同時に実施しているホンソメワケベラなどの社会性魚類における自己鏡像認知と大きく符合するものであり、これらを合わせ、社会性魚類の共感性や社会認知能力の抜本的な見直しが必要かつ画期的な成果が期待できるでことを示唆する成果と言える。これらは、脳神経科学の最近の知見とも、その方向性はおおむね合致し、相補的な展開が今後期待される成果と言える。
