Outline of Final Research Achievements

Each research group demonstrated that more than 30 "organelle zones" exist in organelles in various life phenomena and that they form physiologically important functional domains. These facts demonstrate the validity of the concept of "organelle zones. In addition, the biological importance of the organelle zones became clear, as their abnormalities in multiple organelle zones lead to modulation of cellular functions, the existence of human diseases linked to them, and the possibility of drug discovery targeting the "organelle zones".

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

小胞体やゴルジ体の内部に選別輸送ゾーンが存在する事実を、複数の班員が示したことは、細胞生物学にとって非常に大きな進歩である。連携ゾーンに関しては、さまざまなオルガネラ間で多様な連携ゾーンを発見した。また応答ゾーンの解析により、新たなオルガネラ機能が次々と発見された。これらの発見は、個々のゾーンの解析として重要な知見をもたらしたとともに、ゾーンという新たな視点からの生物学の必要性を示すことができた。
