Outline of Final Research Achievements |
To promote interdisciplinary research and collaboration, the research meetings and subcommittee meetings were held to discuss the research achievements and management policies. In addition, the Center for Education and Research Support of Sustainable Structural Systems was established to promote activities of five research support divisions (mechanical measurement/microscopic manipulation; imaging; image analysis/mathematical simulation; structural analysis/omics; and chemical analysis). As part of the next generation human resource development, the Young Researchers' Workshops were held. A mentoring system was introduced for graduate students and other young researchers. As for international activities, five institutions, including UBC (Canada) and VTT (Finland), were designated as major overseas institutes, international collaboration support was promoted, and international symposiums were held. Outreach activities were also conducted for the general public.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究領域では、植物科学と理工学(とくに建築構造学・空間構造工学)との融合を通して、構造力学的視点から、植物の自律的な力学的最適化戦略を多角的に読み解き、それをモデル化することで、未だ実現されていない、真にサステナブルな構造システムの基盤を創成することを目的としていた。総括班ではこの目的の達成のために、異分野に属する研究者同士の有機的連携体制の構築および国際的研究スキームとしての潮流形成の支援を進めた。これにより、これまでにない新たな学術の流れとして「植物科学と建築構造学・空間構造工学の融合」が進んだ点が本研究の主要な学術的・社会的意義である。
