Outline of Final Research Achievements

The website (https://proteolysis.jp/multimode_autophagy/) was updated as needed to promote the autophagy field. The Autophagy Forum (https://proteolysis.jp/a_forum/), a website introducing published papers, has introduced 224 papers since its establishment, contributing to the rapid exchange of information within the field. The general group meetings were held to discuss issues and plans for the promotion of the project, and contributed to the smooth operation of the project. Held annual meetings of the group and young researchers, contributing to the development of young researchers, exchange of researchers, and promotion of joint research in the field. Held the 10th International Symposium on Autophagy to promote a sense of presence in Japan autophagy research.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

マルチモードオートファジーは細胞内で膜が新規に作られたり、特殊な形態変化を伴って分解に至ったりというような複雑で多様な膜動態を含む。したがって、本研究領域から明らかになったマルチモードオートファジーの分子基盤を足がかりにタンパク質と膜脂質が織りなす細胞機能が解明されれば、これまでにない細胞生物学の新基軸が生まれると考えられる。さらに、本研究領域から明らかになってきた多様な選択的オートファジーの作動原理や生理機能はがんや神経変性疾患といったオートファジー障害関連疾患の予防や治療に結びつくことが期待される。
