Outline of Final Research Achievements

As sessile organisms, plants have evolved a remarkable ability to adapt to fluctuating environments. In our research project, we consider plant environmental adaptation as a consequence of the interactions between the plant and its resident microbes, collectively forming a plant-microbe holobiont. We aimed to establish a new research field that elucidates the molecular mechanisms underlying the assembly of the plant-microbe holobiont and its functional relevance to plant adaptation to various stress environments. Consequently, we identified the molecular mechanisms underpinning the establishment of a plant-microbe holobiont in roots and leaves. Additionally, we developed a live imaging system that allows us to monitor microbial colonization, plant responses, and the nutritional flow between host and microbe using radioisotope (RI) imaging.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
