| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
旧人・新人の交替劇論争に先例のない斬新な発想で取り組み新たなブレイクスルーを達成した。ひとつは、交替劇の原因を旧人と新人の学習能力の違いに主因を求める「学習仮説」を提唱し、その検証作業を、人文科学・生物科学・理工科学諸分野の連携研究をベースとする独創的な研究体制のもとに実践した。この種のアプローチは交替劇研究において例がなく、交替劇論争に強いインパクトを与えた。もうひとつのブレイクスルーは、ヨーロッパ中心に進められてきた交替劇研究を地球規模に拡大したことである。そして、交替劇が演じられた全域を対象とする旧人・新人遺跡データベースNeanderDB (2015年1月31日現在、遺跡総数3216)を構築した。それは、交替劇を論じる既設仮説を新証拠で多面的に検証する実証データとなり、これも交替劇論争に強いインパクトを与えた。以上の研究モデルのもとで学習仮説を検証した結果のポイントは次の通りである。
地球規模で起こった交替劇の経緯は、ヨーロッパ遺跡データに基づいて仮定されてきたような ”旧人文化から新人文化へ移行” といった単純化される包括的モデルでは説明でない。交替劇の進行・様相は時代的地域的に異なり、多様性が注目される。交替劇の主因として、新人のイノベーション能力が移住拡散した先々で対峙することになった環境変動や歴史的に形成された社会環境との相互作用に基づいていることが明らかになった。旧人の学習能力を制御する化石脳抽出手法を開発し、古神経学的分析のベースとなる化石脳学習機能マップをはじめて作成した。結論として、旧人・新人脳で小脳と頭頂葉に違いが存在する。小脳は内部モデルに基づく学習を、頭頂葉は、道具使用、空間認知、象徴の表象などに関する機能を司る領域であり、学習能力と密接に関係する。すなわち、旧人と新人の脳の間には学習行動を司る神経基盤の形態差が存在することが示唆された。
