Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The neocortex is formed as the six layers that are sequentially generated in the order so that newly synthesized layer neurons get over the older layer cells (in-side-out fashion). The neocortical cells also are formed as so called "areas" that are divided into some of 50 different parts of the neocortex. Each area is defined as a functional unit which is originally distinguished by cytoarchetechnotic differences. It is thought that understanding the formation of the layers and areas can contribute to understanding the basic principle underlying the function of the neocortex. We therefore organized a group grant that is specifically focused on the formation and the functional organization of the neocortex. This group started in 2010 for five years and achieved a significant contribution to the field not only in Japan but also internationally.
