Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究班では、黒潮流域上に、ルソン海峡、台湾東沖、東シナ海陸棚縁辺部、トカラ海峡とその下流域の4つの海域を設定し、計14回の観測航海を通じて、乱流混合の実態把握および乱流混合の生態系への影響解析を行うとともに、数値実験により、乱流混合の物理過程および広域にわたる混合強度の評価を行った。トカラ海峡周辺海域は集中観測海域として、乱流強度など物理要素の観測に加えて、生物・化学要素に関する観測も加え、毎年多項目の観測データが得られ、多角的な成果が得られた。黒潮の上流域である、ルソン海峡、台湾東方域では、それぞれフィリピン大学および国立台湾大学との国際共同研究によって遂行され、海嶺周辺域で強化された乱流を捉えることができた。東シナ海陸棚縁辺域では、潮汐周期に同期した短波長の内部孤立波が頻繁に起こっていること、さらにそれが鉛直混合に寄与していることを観測から確認できた。観測データが時空間的に限定的である点を補うため、トカラ海峡および台湾東方では高解像度の数値実験を行い、強混合を生み出す物理過程を提示するとともに、海嶺を含む海域全体の乱流混合の定量的評価を行った。乱流混合の生態系への影響については、トカラ海峡とルソン海峡における観測を通して、海嶺等の海底地形の周辺で生成される顕著な鉛直混合による有光層への栄養塩の供給は、外洋域に比較して100倍以上になることが示された。さらに、鉛直混合によって供給された栄養塩の基礎生産への影響を把握するための植物プランクトンの組成比、栄養塩を添加した培養実験による動・植物プランクトンの成長の評価などを行い、対象とした海域で生起する強い乱流混合が生物生産に寄与していることが実証された。一方、トカラ海峡下流域も含めた観測の結果からは、沿岸水の水平移入の重要性が新たに提起され、水平混合の評価に発展させる必要があることが示唆された。
