研究代表者のラボでは、ひきこもり者や現代うつ患者の精神医学診断・心理検査・血液を含む多軸的データを取得可能な専門外来を大学病院内に構築し、臨床データを集積することに成功し、すでに100名を越えるデータを蓄積している。ひきこもり者の生物学的基盤は一切報告されていなかったが、こうしたデータの予備的解析により、男性ひきこもり者では、血中尿酸値が低下しており、女性ひきこもり者ではHDLコレステロール値が低下していることを見出し、さらにひきこもり状況にない若者でも回避的性格が信頼行動（リスクを冒す行動）や信頼感の低下に影響を与え、その制御に尿酸・HDLコレステロール・FDP・高感度CRPなど炎症関連物質が関与することを見出した（Hayakawa et al. Sci Rep 2018）。いわゆる現代うつ患者を含む抑うつを訴える患者において、幾つかの血中代謝物が関連することを見出すことに成功した（Setoyama et al. PLOS ONE 2016；Kuwano et al. Journal of Affective Disorders 2018）。さらに、ひきこもりおよび現代うつ関連の研究を拡大するためにそれらの簡便な評価法が不可欠であり、今回、ひきこもり傾向と現代うつ気質を簡便に評価可能な自記式質問票を開発した（Teo et al. PCN 2018, Kato et al. PCN 2019, in press)。
奈良医大では、ひきこもり関連のモデルマウスを開発中であり、そのプロトタイプの開発に成功し、現在、その脳内基盤にグリアがいかに影響するかの解析をすすめている段階にある。
