Outline of Final Research Achievements

We infected mallard ducks, the natural host of influenza viruses, with avian influenza viruses and found that they were asymptomatic, but innate immune responses were induced in their intestinal tracts in the early phase of infection and acquired immune responses in the late phase of infection.
We also established new animal infection models and analyzed the pathogenicity of avian influenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2. We collected samples from domestic and foreign wild animals and metagenomically analyzed them to identify novel crane adenoviruses and bat coronaviruses.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
